The Artist

The advent of the internet/ social media circles has sparked a new kind of designer, one who seems to be shielded within his own personal space, surrounded by nothing more than the latest Adobe suite, a glimmering mac and bookmarks to quite a few logo inspiration sites and lottery logo sites. Quite comfortable in their struggle to recreate the latest ” Chermayeff & Geismar” (making that logo move) logo, creating the perfect shape and form yet somehow missing the function.

When i first went, and i say in quotes, “freelance” the net seemed to be an amicable place much like the pub, where one could sit quite comfortably and talk fairly intellectually about the goings on and the latest creation. However from personal experience it seems to have morphed into a beast, and in case your not following, im still on logo design, maybe design in general, as the numbers of designers – qualified and non qualified increase, we slowly turn it into the the one thing we struggled to emerge from, as well as the perfect buyers market. Are we damaging ourselves in the process I wonder…

Spec/ Crowdsourcing a thin fine line where when times are tough and you are in between projects it is hard to stay away from doing spec work. I once thought that these site would be good to stay sharp, but for me to be profitable it would take far more time than i could allocate to these Logo Lotteries…wheras now i turn towards creating experimental logos, admittedly for fun, but a good majority end up being used as different from the trends which seem to ensue.

Again i say these are all my opinions wrapped up in a blanket and these were 5 mins of my time which i wont get back … also why i wont choose to argue your course of action but smile and utilise my British sarcasm to the fullest … but then ill contradict myself and then say … stop creating the box you choose to work in .
